Gennady Zyuganov (Геннадий Андреевич Зюганов) was born June 26, 1944 in the village of Mimrino in the Orel region. The head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) since it was established in 1993 and has run for president of Russia three times.
Zyuganov graduated with honours in 1969 from the department of Mathematics and Physics at the Oryol Pedagogical College.
Studied as a part-time postgraduate student at the Academy of Social Sciences where defended his thesis in 1980.
1963-1966, served in the Soviet Army.
1966, became a member of the Communist Party.
1971-1974, served as First Secretary of the Oryol Young Communist League regional committee.
1974-1983, served as Secretary of the Oryol Communist Party Municipal Committee.
1983-1989, instructor for the propaganda and campaigning section of the Communist party Central Committee (CPCC).
1989-1990, became Deputy Head of the propaganda section of the CPCC.
1990, elected Secretary of the Central Committee, member of the Comunist Party Politbureau, and Chairman of the permanent comission of the Russian CPCC on humanitarian and ideological roblems.
June 12-13, 1992, took part in the first Russian National Congress and became a member of its presidium.
October 1992, became a member of the National Salvation Front Organizating Committee.
February 13-14, 1993, elected to the Communist party Central Executive Committee and elected Chairman of the Committee's first meeting.
July 25-26, 1993, took part in the 2nd congress of the National Salvation Front.
December 17, 1993, elected Deputy of the State Duma.
April-May, 1994, helped initiate the "Accord for Russia" movement.
January 21-22, 1995, became Chairman of the Russian Communist Party Central Committee.
December 17, 1995, re-elected to the State Duma.
February 15, 1996, nominated by the Communist Party as party candidate for president.
June-July, 1996, unsuccessfully ran for president and finished second to Boris Yeltsin.
August 1996, elected Chairman of the "People's Patriotic Movement".
May, 1999, led the Communist in a failed attempt to impeach President Yeltsin.
March, 2000, second unsuccessful run for president.
December 2007, declared candidate for presidential elections on March 2, 2008
