VOLKOV, Alexander Alexandrovich

President of the Republic of Udmurtia Alexander Volkov 03/07/2007

Alexander Volkov (Александр Александрович Волков) was born December 25, 1951 in Bryansk. He has been president of the Republic of Udmurtia since 2000.

In 1978 Volkov graduated from Perm Polytechnical Institute. He went on to receive a PhD in Economics from the Moscow Institute of International Business in 1996.

He began his political career in Udmurtia when the Soviet Union was on the brink of collapsing, serving as deputy chairman for architecture of the local administration from 1990 to 1993. He was made chairman in June 1993 and in November the same year he was elected to the Russian Federation Countil.

In 2000 he was elected president of the Republic of Udmurtia and has since been reinstated twice - by election in 2004 and presidential decree in 2009.

Volkov is married and has two children.
