January 1996 - appointed to the Federation Council, vice-chairman of the Committee for Security and Defence, member of the Commission for Regulations and Parliamentary Procedures; Russian representative, Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (CLRAE), Council of Europe
1995 - head of Far East and Transbaikal Interparliament Association
Since February 2001 - chairman of the Federation Council Committee for Security and Defense

Married, with two children (son and daughter).
