Nikolai Fyodorov (Николай Васильевич Федоров) was born May 9, 1958 in the village of Chedino, Republic of Chuvashia.
In 1980 he graduated from the law faculty of Kazan State University and completed further studies at the Institute of State and Law at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, graduating with a PhD in 1985. In 1993 he was elected to the State Duma, and in December of the following year was named president of the Republic of Chuvashia. He was reelected to this position twice, in 1997 and 2001.
He served as Minister of Justice from late 1991 to March 1993. He was a supporter of market reform but opposed Yeltsin's actions in Chechnya. In August 2010 he was replaced as president by Mikhail Ignatiyev. He is now one of Chuvashia's representatives on the Federation Council.
Fyodorov is an ethnic Chuvash. He is fluent in German and is married with two children.
