Meeting in the Middle

President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday met with a group of key leaders from the non-systemic opposition and reaffirmed his support for a package of reforms that would somewhat even out the political playing field. But while some opposition members cautiously hailed the meeting as a success, the unprecedented meeting is largely for show, experts warned – and Medvedev’s own weakened position may leave little room for meaningful change.

Why I’m Voting for Putin

The Kremlin has launched a new pre-election campaign that consists of a series of videos featuring various celebrities and cultural icons explaining why they plan to vote for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the upcoming presidential contest. The series has already caused a scandal, and the opposition’s own video campaign and host of recognizable figures seem to pose a threat to the Kremlin’s new project. Yet experts argue that despite either side’s PR efforts, public opinion will remain mostly unchanged.

The New New Generation

The Kremlin announced its plans for a new youth policy on Tuesday, which will formally shift control of pro-government youth activities from the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs to the presidential administration. The change-up likely reflects the notorious pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi’s diminishing role and may shed light on the new influence of Kremlin insider Vyacheslav Volodin, who recently replaced longtime chief ideologist Vladislav Surkov as deputy head of the presidential administration. Yet it remains unclear whether the new shuffle will have the desired effect.

Reports of reform in the ruling United Russia party are rippling throughout the press, as several outlets have cited party sources who claim that various “rebranding” efforts, leadership shuffles, and other plans are in the works. The news has shed light on the increasingly divergent competing factions within the party, but has also raised speculation over whether reform can save the increasingly unpopular and seemingly doomed party.

Can’t Beat It? Hack It!

A month before the March 4 presidential elections, the heat has been turned up in Russian new media. In recent weeks activists and participants on both sides of the fence have embarked on an all-out character assault through sensationalist reporting, phone tapping and hacking e-mail accounts. The incidents, among other things, reveal that Kremlin supporters are equally eager to utilize new media to discredit the growing opposition movement. Yet observers note that such tactics most often miss the mark.

A Terrorist's Word's Worth

Chechen insurgent chief Doku Umarov surprised Russia watchers last week when he announced he would no longer target Russian civilians. In his latest video, Umarov declared that he believes Russians do not support the current government, and that the self-proclaimed Caucasus Emirate will instead continue to eliminate only Russian officials and security forces it perceives to be occupiers of Muslim lands. Yet it remains to be seen whether the proclamation is a genuine change of strategy, or a publicity stunt meant to keep the insurgency relevant.
